On March 19-20 by the efforts of USAID regional economic cooperation project in partnership with “Aigul Line” company the “The development of carpet weaving in Central Asia andAfghanistan” seminar was held.
The seminar attendee were the representatives of different companies specializing on hand-made carpets manufacturing from Afghanistan, Tadzhikistan, Karakalpakstan and Kazakhstan – and also of some state and business structures: Central Asia UNESCO cluster office in Almaty and Eurasia Foundation, Central Asia Cooperation in Support of Arts (CACSA), ethnographers, the representatives of education, research and culture institutions (L. N. Gumilev Eurasian National University, Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History, Archeology, and Ethnography), etc.
The presentations of participants showed an accurate picture of the state of things, problems and prospects of carpet weaving in Afghanistan and the states of Central Asia.
As the international expert the representative of Aid to Artisans organization (WashingtonD.C.) Jane Griffiths was invited. Her organization deals with development and promoting of handicraft products.
At the end of seminar the Memorandum of Cooperation was signed and the plan for future collaborative activities and development of export potential of hand-made carpets manufacturer from above-named states with support of REC USAID was evolved.
